The 7th Bamako photography festival is up and running until 23 December. This year’s theme is African cities (‘In the Town and Beyond’) and showcases images (and video) of an Africa completely different from the clichés and the stereotypes. The Bamako festival aims to map Africa’s capital cities, how they vary, and the rapid change now underway. Anyone travelling across the region these days is struck by the amount of construction (Bamako itself, but also Gaberone, Kigali and of course Jo’burg and Cape Town – both getting ready for the 2010 world cup). More employment is the result, but sometimes poor people just get shoved aside as the value of city land rises. If you can’t make it to Mali for the festival, then do check out their web site where African photographers tell their own stories. Back in Manchester, check out the School of Environment and Development’s new research initiative, the Global Urban Reserch Centre (GURC).
